Mark Williams has joined Richmond as a development coach less than 24 hours after resigning from his post as a senior assistant coach at Greater Western Sydney.
Williams was widely expected to take the reins from Kevin Sheedy at the Giants in 2013, but instead asked to be released from the final year of his contract to move to Melbourne for family reasons.
He will reunite at Punt Road with Tigers coach Damien Hardwick, who was a player in the 2004 premiership side that Williams coached at Port Adelaide.
"Mark has an outstanding pedigree as a coach, in particular with the development of young players, and we're thrilled to have him join our coaching group," Richmond general manager of football Craig Cameron said.
"We have worked hard to build an exciting playing list over the past few years, and we believe Mark will really help add to the progression of the group."
Sheedy, who was recently appointed for another year at the helm of GWS, said the Tigers would benefit from Williams' knowledge and experience.
"I think he's an acquisition to the club. He'll help Richmond get into the eight and I'd like to see that, being an old Tiger," Sheedy said after the Giants' 28-point loss to North Melbourne on Saturday.
"He's one of the best teacher coaches I've ever worked with - there's no doubt about that."
