Carlton won't be rushed into a decision on Brett Ratten's future at least until after the Blues' final match of the season on Sunday, the club said in a statement on Monday.

An unacceptable loss to Gold Coast on Saturday night left the Blues out of finals contention and intensified speculation Ratten would be sacked as coach despite him being contracted for another season.

But president Stephen Kernahan told the club website no decisions on the club's future would be made until the end of the season.

"Everyone at the club is terribly disappointed with the loss on Saturday night, however it does not change our position in relation to reviewing our operations at the end of the season," Kernahan said.

"After the weekend's matches we now know Sunday's game against St Kilda will be our final match for the season. There will be no decisions and indeed no further meetings to review the operations of the Club until after Sunday's game."

Former Collingwood coach Michael Malthouse has been put forward as a likely replacement and added fuel to the fire by declaring he will either coach next year or never again.

"If not next year, then I won't coach," Malthouse told Neil Mitchell on ''3AW'' on Monday morning.

"The game will shift and I don't want to make a fool of myself and let people down."

The former premiership coach insisted he had not Carlton Manager Peter Sidewell for months and had not been approached by Carlton at this stage.

Ratten and the players hit the track for a closed session.

Midfielder Mitch Robinson told waiting camera crews the team had let Ratten down, saying he hoped the coach would stay.

The worst team in the AFL in Gold Coast lead by the second best player in league in Ablett sank the Finals hopes of a top 4 team on paper in Carlton lead by the AFLs best player in Judd. The Suns were $14 to beat the Blues. Under dog victory of the decade, only bettered by Greeks Euro 2004 win.

It's the players that lost the game didnt stick to the game plan???????? Judd has been stand offish skirting most packs, coaches instructions? I am sure he is carrying a minor injury of some kind. I reckon the best result is Malthouse for two or three years with Ratten as assistant. Some have to go ,but only a couple ,bad recruitment also

couldnt happen to a better club. the filth at carlton deserve some misery. whats better than seeing port beat them by ten goals, seeing them losing to the sun which ends their final campaign and gets the coach sacked

The chyropractor (JUDD) has to be dropped as captain and Scotland should be captain. Most underrated player in the team. Ratts has had one season too many and Malthouse should be in for next season. Put Cruizer in at centre half forward de list Bower and Megan Gales boyfriend cant kick to save himself. And put the rest of them on notice.
