Carlton skipper Chris Judd has been suspended for four matches after the tribunal found him guilty of intentional misconduct on Tuesday night.

Judd's 'chicken wing' tackle on North Melbourne's Leigh Adams was referred straight to the tribunal by the match review panel.

Carlton argued that his actions were reckless and he was trying to strip the ball from Adams, but the tribunal determined it to be intentional.

AFL counsel Geoff Gleeson recommended a minimum of 425 demerit points and a maximum of 550 for the incident.

The tribunal had the final say and decided on 450 points and a four-match suspension, close to three hours after the hearing started.

He will miss matches against Western Bulldogs, Richmond, Sydney and Brisbane.

Meanwhile, Brisbane big man Daniel Merrett is free to play against Gold Coast this week after he successfully had his charge of rough conduct downgraded from reckless to negligent.

Merrett risked a two-match ban if found guilty, but can now just escape with a reprimand and 93.75 points to his future record.
