Marc Murphy will miss at least four matches after Carlton confirmed the midfielder will undergo surgery on his injured left shoulder.
Murphy collided heavily with Adelaide's Patrick Dangerfield in the second quarter of the Blues' 69-point drubbing by the Crows at Etihad Stadium on Sunday and was substituted off at the main break.
Scans on Monday revealed a fractured bone in the shoulder that requires arthroscopic surgery.
Carlton football operations manager Andrew McKay said: "We will not have an accurate indication of how long Marc will be out of action until the surgery is performed however we do know he will not be available until after our bye in Round 13."
The Blues face Melbourne, Port Adelaide, Geelong and West Coast before their scheduled bye.
Carlton captain Chris Judd said earlier in the day the loss of Murphy provided an opportunity for other players to step up and fill the void."Really important players go down and it does open the door for other players to stand up," Judd said.
