Garland was a rapid improver in 2008 as the youngster from Tasmania played an important role in the Melbourne defence. He played just the two games in his debut year in 2007 but managed to play 17 last season as a key defender. Garland allowed his opponents to score just 26 goals from these games underlying his defensive abilities. He has the height and strength to become one of the better defenders in the competition as his career progresses.
