McCarthy was selected with the Magpies' first pick (31st overall) at the 2007 NAB AFL Draft. He played the final six games of the season including Collingwood's two finals matches. He impressed at TAC Cup level as an inside midfielder for the Dandenong Stingrays averaging 22 disposals, 10 contested possessions and three clearances per game.
