Dawes missed the 2007 season with a knee injury and started 2008 with Collingwood in the VFL. He played 16 games at that level and booted 21 goals before being promoted to the Magpies side in Round 19, keeping his spot until the end of the season. He showed he is strong overhead but he will need to have more impact on the scoreboard if he is to become a valuable key forward deep in Collingwood's forward-line.
