McCulloch was picked at No.69 in the 2008 NAB AFL Draft. He is a long-term ruck prospect who represented Tasmania at junior level. At the 2008 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships he kicked six goals and grabbed five contested marks in five games. He was a multiple goalkicker in two of Tasmania's three games at the 2007 NAB AFL Under-16 Championships, indicating he also has the potential to be used up forward.
