Cornelius was picked at No.57 in the 2008 NAB AFL Draft after being touted as a potential top-10 pick in his early junior days. Given this, he may end up a bargain with his contested marking being his major strength. Playing as a key forward, he took the most contested marks of anyone at both the 2005 and 2006 NAB AFL Under-16 Championships as well as the 2007 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships as a bottom-aged player.
