Merrett has proven to be the perfect replacement for Mal Michael who left the club at the end of 2006. He started his AFL career as a key forward, however he had little success in that position. In the last two years he has not missed a game with the Lions grooming him as a long-term key defensive player. He conceded 44 goals in 22 games in 2008, with his list of opponents including big forwards such as Matthew Richardson, Brendan Fevola, Barry Hall, Anthony Rocca and Jarryd Roughead.
