Macdonald battled injuries between 2006-07, but playing as a general defender he rebounded in 2008 with a career best season. He averaged 21 disposals and six contested possessions. He was the best of the Lions at ground level in the defensive 50 and won the ball off the opposition more than any other player at the club. His excellent season was rewarded with his first top-10 finish in the club B&F.
