Masten was seen as a star in the making at junior level and the Eagles pounced by selecting him with their first pick in the 2008 NAB AFL Draft. He struggled in his first year at AFL level, with injuries restricting him to just nine games. His ball winning ability is his greatest strength and although he didn't dominate, he still averaged 15 disposals, four marks and two inside 50s per game. Masten also demonstrated his defensive capabilities by averaging five tackles per game - the most ever recorded by a player in his debut season.
