McDonald is Melbourne's premier midfielder, having won the club's B&F in the past two seasons. In that time he has also been one of the competition's leading tacklers, leading the AFL in tackles in 2006 and ranking second in 2007. Despite having plenty of impact when on the ground, McDonald was the AFL's third-most benched midfielder and has regularly spent time on the bench over his career. While he doesn't impact the scoreboard much, McDonald's value is in-and-under the packs and applying pressure to the opposition.
