Moloney is a long-kicking midfielder who has struggled with injury in the past two seasons. Arriving in a controversial trade from Geelong in 2005, Moloney was a key member of the Melbourne midfield in his first season at the club, playing 21 games and averaging the most inside 50s in the AFL. Since then injuries have hit hard and he has played only 17 games in the past two years, however has still shown his preference for a long and direct style of play when on the park.
