Despite playing only two seasons of AFL football, Birchall has developed rapidly and established himself in the Hawks' best 22. He has produced two impressive seasons as a running defender, totalling 40 games in that time - the second-most of any player taken in the 2005 NAB AFL Draft. Birchall's main strength is his ability to run off his man from the half-back line and find the ball in open space, with his career disposal average of 20 per match being the most of any player taken at the 2005 NAB AFL Draft.
