Egan was the hard luck story of Geelong's 2007 season as the gun key defender missed the finals campaign and Premiership due to injury. His ability to stop the opposition's No.1 key forward was rewarded with All-Australian selection and was important in allowing teammate Matthew Scarlett to be freed up. A smart defender who can read the play, Egan was a bargain selection (No.62) in the 2004 NAB AFL Draft.
