McPharlin has spent the majority of his eight years in the AFL in defence but has proven his versatility in recent seasons in stints up forward. He settled in the backline in the second half of 2006 and majority of 2007, never conceding huge amounts of goals but showing an ability to win plenty of the ball down back. Mark Harvey used him up forward late in the season to suggest he may be an option in attack for the Dockers once again in 2008.
