In the past two seasons, Fletcher has been released from his role as the No.1 stopper in the Essendon defence to playing mainly as a loose-man. He recorded a career-high of 21 disposals last season - the third-most of any key defender. He also launched the third most scores from the defensive 50 of any player in the competition and despite missing three games had 15 more rebound 50s than any other player during the H&A season. He was also rewarded with selection in the All-Australian side last season - the first time he has won selection since 2000. He also finished second in the club's B&F count after finishing third the previous season. He has won the award once - in 2000.
