Pears, or 'Fruity' to his new teammates was drafted by Essendon with their second pick (23rd overall) at the 2007 NAB AFL Draft. He was one of three Western Australia's taken by the Bombers at that draft and was impressive playing as a key defender at the 2007 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships, grabbing 10 marks from opposition kicks - the most of any division one player.
