Atkinson spent the 2007 season playing with Essendon's VFL affiliate the Bendigo Bombers in the VFL. He played 14 games and was named in the best players on eight occasions. Atkinson also played for the Rumbalara Football Club in Shepparton later crossing over to WA and playing for Claremont before returning to Victoria in 2007. Atkinson was taken with the 21st selection at the 2007 NAB Rookie draft and at 22 years of age he could be ready for AFL action in 2008 if the need arises.
