Gumbleton was taken with the No.2 selection at the 2006 NAB AFL Draft and played five games in his debut season. He made his debut in Round 17 and held his spot for five of the final six rounds of the season. He burst onto the scene when, representing WA at the 2004 Under-16 Championship, he grabbed seven contested marks in the opening game. His strength is obviously his aerial ability and, despite being seen as a future centre-half forward for Essendon, he has shown throughout his junior career that he can also hold down a spot at centre-half back.
