Davey, the younger brother of Melbourne's star Aaron, played 14 games in his debut season and booted 15 goals. He averaged 12 disposals, three marks and one goal per match, hitting the target with 85% of disposals - a great disposal efficiency for a debutant. Like his brother he not only impressed when the ball was in his hands but excelled with his defensive pressure averaging the second most tackles per game at Essendon. He was also the inaugural recipient of the AFL Army Award and dominated the nomination process with three of the final six nominations.
