McCarthy spent his 2007 season playing school football for Peninsula Grammar and TAC Cup football for Dandenong Stingrays. He is an inside midfielder who averaged 22 disposals, 10 contested possessions and three clearances per game. Collingwood selected McCarthy with their first live selection at the 2007 NAB AFL Draft (31st overall) and see him as being able to hold down a spot in the midfield or as a defender in the future.
