Thoolen represented Bendigo in the TAC Cup competition playing 13 games for them in 2007. He was used mainly as a ruckman who pushed forward, but despite this, the Magpies have ear-marked him as a future defender. He has never been a big ball winner which was evident at the 2007 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships when he averaged just nine disposals and two marks in his three appearances.
