Dawes was selected with Collingwood's third pick (28th overall) at the 2006 NAB AFL Draft. He was unable to play any football until late July last season after he injured his knee late in 2006. He played five games for Williamstown's reserves side in the VFL booting 14 goals. He also managed three games at VFL senior level for a return of six goals. He was dominant in the air at junior level and his four contested marks in the 2006 TAC Cup were the most of any player that season.
