Browne was Carlton's second pick (36th overall) at the 2007 NAB AFL Draft. At junior level he showed he was an athletic general defender who could also be used through the midfield. Playing off half-back at the 2007 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships, he collected an average of 20 disposals and four rebound 50s and was probably unlucky to miss All-Australian selection.
