Russell was Carlton's first pick (eighth overall) at the 2004 NAB AFL Draft. He played a career-high 18 games last season and averaged career-high numbers in almost every area. He was used in various run-with roles throughout the season but failed to keep many of his opponents in check finishing with the worst disposal differential at the club. He was damaging when bringing the ball inside the forward 50 however as 75% of his entries finished in a Carlton possession - ranked equal second at the club.
