Schmidt played two games last season making his debut in the Round 10 draw against Richmond. At the 2005 NAB AFL Under-16 Championships, he was won of the best players in division one for winning the contested ball through the midfield but at the 2006 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships he added another string to his bow roaming across the half-back line repelling opposition attacks. He also played 12 games for the Suncoast Lions last season averaging 25 disposals per game.
