Hawksley, in his first season on Brisbane's list, managed 11 games for the Suncoast Lions in the AFLQ before a ruptured tendon in his finger brought about an early end to his season. He averaged 17 disposals and five marks in those games playing mainly through the midfield. He built a reputation at junior level as a well-balanced defender who was a clever reader of the ball.
