Austin spent his junior career playing for North Ballarat in the TAC Cup. In 2006 he was used predominately as a forward playing 15 games and booting 25 goals. He also won a bit of the ball that season averaging 16 disposals per match. In 2007 he made the move into the midfield averaging 22 disposals and three clearances per game while still maintaining a presence around goals booting 24 goals. Austin is also a strong tackler as seen at the 2007 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships when he laid 22 tackles in three games - ranked equal second of all division one players.
