Merrett filled the void left at full-back for Brisbane after the departure of Mal Michael. He played all 22 games last season and finished eighth at the club's B&F count. He conceded 38 goals for the season - a terrific result considering he continually played on the opposition's most dangerous tall forward including the likes of Barry Hall, Matthew Lloyd, Lance Franklin and Matthew Richardson. He kept Anthony Rocca to just one goal in two games and was benched only three times last season - the least of any player in the competition.
