As a junior Bird was an elite ball winner who regularly picked up more than 30 disposals a match. His form in the past two NAB AFL Under-18 Championships earned him All-Australian honours in consecutive years and the Hunter Harrison Medal in 2007 as the best division two player. Bird, an inside midfielder, was the equal shortest player selected in last year's draft.
