Smith was added to the Swans' rookie-list at the start of 2007 after picking up 26 disposals and eight looseball-gets in the 2006 TAC Cup grand final playing for Oakleigh. He played 18 games for Sydney's reserves in the Canberra league, spending most of his time in defence.
