McGinnity represented WA at the 2008 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships where he averaged 20 disposals and five tackles per game in his three appearances. His best game of the carnival was against Vic Metro when opposed to Trent Cotchin. In one of the most effective run with roles seen in recent championships, he kept Cotchin to just 12 disposals while winning 21 himself.
