With Brian Lake playing a more attacking game in 2007, Hargrave was given the job to play on the opposition's biggest and best key forwards early in the season. He matched up on players of the calibre of Lance Franklin and Nick Riewoldt in the opening rounds but after conceding four goals on Franklin in Round 5, he was relieved of these duties and played generally on the opposition's third-best forward. He played more minutes than any other Bulldog and was rarely benched as the new role suited him, allowing him to win the ball on the ground and improve the attacking part of his game.
