In a disappointing season, Hughes played just seven AFL matches in 2007, kicking three goals in his first two matches, but was then goalless in four of the next five. In the VFL he played 14 games for Coburg, kicking 18 goals, however he was dropped to the reserves for the grand final where he kicked five goals. As a junior, Hughes won All-Australian selection representing South Australia as a centre half-forward who could take plenty of marks on the lead.
