In his early days as a junior Collard was rated highly amongst recruiters. Fremantle picked him up at 31 in the 2006 NAB AFL Draft but surprisingly delisted him after one year where he played one AFL game and kicked 26 goals in 17 senior WAFL games for South Fremantle.
