Thurstans played the fifth-most minutes at port Adelaide last year after finding a niche for himself in defence. He struggled against the likes of Lance Franklin, Brendan Fevola, Quinten Lynch and Matthew Richardson and for the season conceded 36 goals to his direct opponents. After the retirement of Darryl Wakelin, Thurstans, despite being in just his sixth season will become one of Port Adelaide's most experienced defenders.
