Motlop's stocks slipped last season as stress fractures of the back kept him on the sidelines. As a result he was taken at pick 28 in the 2007 NAB AFL Draft. He managed just one game in the SANFL under-19s in 2007. It was at the 2006 NAB AFL Under-16 Championships where he made a name for himself. He won the Alan McLean Medal at the 2006 NAB AFL Under-16 Championships where he led all division two players in handball-receives, had the second-most effective kicks and averaged 29 disposals and two goals in the three games.
