In his second season in the AFL, Carlile managed nine games as part of Port Adelaide's defence. As a key defender he conceded 11 goals for the season playing on the second or third-best forward each week including the likes of Jarryd Roughead, Robert Murphy and Brent Staker. Carlile is the obvious choice to fill the void left in defence after the retirement of Darryl Wakelin.
