Pettigrew finally settled in defence last season after playing a variety of roles in his first three seasons. He is a defender that knows when to defend - highlighted by his ranking of second in spoils at Port Adelaide in 2007, but also when to attack. He ranked second at the club in running bounces and third in rebound 50s. Pettigrew's athletic ability made him the obvious choice to match up on the opposition's best leading forward, with his list of opponents last season including Scott Lucas, Lance Franklin, Brad Johnson and Travis Cloke.
