Thompson played 13 games for Geelong in the VFL in 2007, saving his best performance of the season for the Cats' premiership win. He picked up 29 disposals across half-back in the grand final and was duly rewarded with a spot on the Kangaroos' list as a mature-age recruit. At 21 years of age, he was the oldest player taken in the first 40 picks in the 2007 NAB AFL Draft.
