Gibson was performing well as an under-sized defender last year until a freak accident after Round 10 kept him out of action for three months. A head injury suffered in his bathroom was thought to have ended his season, however he returned in Round 22 to play a key role in the semi final win over Hawthorn. In that game he kept the dangerous Lance Franklin to three goals, a superb effort considering Franklin's match-winning effort the previous week. Gibson stays close to the defensive goal, reads the play well and is always accountable for his direct opponent.
