Smith is a mature-age recruit who spent the 2007 season playing at centre half-forward for West Perth in the WAFL. A strongly built player with strong hands, he booted 24 goals in 20 games and was named the WAFL's Rising Star, an amazing achievement considering he gave up the game for a year in 2006.
