After injuries restricted the highly-rated Smith in his first two seasons, he finally got on the park in 2007 and showed his immense talent. Playing across half-back, his sure hands, ability to stop an opponent while winning plenty of the ball and using it with precision saw him be considered one of the young stars of the game. He was superb in his side's 2007 semi final win over Hawthorn, providing plenty of rebound off half-back and using the ball with precision.
