Armstrong was taken with Adelaide's fifth pick at the 2007 NAB AFL Draft (58th overall). He played for eventual Division Two winners NSW/ACT at the 2007 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships. He also represented Calder Cannons in the TAC Cup playing two games for an average of 21 disposals.
