Armstrong represented NSW/ACT at the 2007 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships while spending the season playing for the Calder Cannons in the TAC Cup. He was selected with the Crows' fifth pick at the 2007 NAB AFL Draft (58th overall) and spent the entire 2008 season playing for North Adelaide in the SANFL reserves playing 19 games and booting 12 goals. He is a quick flanker that can play at both ends of the ground.
