Petrenko represented South Australia at the 2007 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships where he played all three games averaging 14 disposals and used the ball well hitting the target with 81% of his disposals. He was a surprise non-selection at the 2007 NAB AFL Draft but was given a chance after Adelaide selected him at the 2007 Rookie Draft. Petrenko underwent shoulder surgery towards the end of 2007 so he will have a delayed start to the 2008 season.
