Mackay was hampered by hamstring injuries throughout 2007 managing just two games for South Adelaide in the SANFL for the entire season. At junior level he was not only a big ball winner but was also an elite performer at winning the contested ball - averaging 11 per game playing for Oakleigh in the TAC Cup in 2006.
