'One of the greatest moments in Australian racing'

Chautauqua has stormed home from dead last with 200m to go to claim an historic third-straight TJ Smith Stakes on Day 1 of The Championships at Royal Randwick.

The 1200m $2.5 million sprint looked like a battle between English and Fell Swoop in the final stretch on Saturday before the gelding made a sensational charge from the turn to score.

He finished three lengths ahead of English after Tommy Berry's ride, with Fell Swoop in third.

"That is one the greatest moments in Australian racing history," Bruce McAvaney said in commentary.

"Surely the greatest sprinter since Black Caviar."

Chautauqua reverted to his traditional distance range of 1200m after being extended to 1500m last start in the George Ryder Stakes won by Winx.

He wasn't disgraced, finishing third, but his performance prompted trainers John, Wayne and Michael Hawkes to abandon thoughts of a Doncaster Mile start and return the horse to the sprint arena which has been his forte.
